Sunday Worship

This coming Sunday we are moving back to the book of Proverbs! Many of you will remember the structure of Proverbs that we have pointed out previously – the first 9 chapters have fairly large blocks of teaching on a set topic and then beginning in chapter 10, we move into a section (through chapter 24) of the Proverbs of King Solomon. Then in chapters 25 and 26, there is a section of Solomon’s Proverbs collected and copied by Hezekiah’s men. These two sections of the Proverbs of Solomon are much more disjointed than what we encountered in chapters 1-9. This means that we will need to take a different approach to these chapters than we did with the first section. We are going to call this the “What Does Proverbs Say About ________?” section. That is to say, while we will be expounding the text expositionally, we will also be moving through the remainder of Proverbs topically.

For instance, this coming Sunday we will be asking the question, “What does Proverbs say about Humility and Pride?” To answer this question, we will gather the various verses in Proverbs that speak to the issues of Humility and Pride most specifically. There are numerous other topics addressed by the book of Proverbs such as Blessings vs. Curses, Life vs. Death, Truth vs. Deceit, Wisdom vs. Folly, Generosity vs. Greed, and many others.

Each Sunday, we will have an insert that includes a printout of the various verses that address the topic in question. This will be an unusual way to work through a book of the Bible, but I believe it is the best way to move forward in an orderly and helpful fashion. I am eager to dig deeply into God’s Word in Proverbs with you as we study this book of Wisdom and pray the Lord will guide you in delighting more and more in the understanding of his Word.

The verses we will be reading/considering from Proverbs that speak to the topic of Humility and Pride are:

  • 3:34; 6:16; 8:13; 11:2; 13:10; 14:3; 15:25, 33; 16:5; 16:18-19; 17:19; 18:11-12; 20:6; 21:4, 22; 22:4; 25:14, 27; 26:12, 16; 27:1; 28:11, 25; 29:23; 30:12, 32.

What is Ecclesiology? Ecclesiology is the study of the church, particularly it structure and its role in the world today. We will be looking at the “What, Why, Who, and How?” of the Church, being careful to consider the various distinctives that are ours in the Reformed Tradition. It might sound like a bit of a dull undertaking, but it truly is fascinating to see how the Lord has set up his Church to bring honor and glory to his name!
